Friday preview: All eyes on US February non-farm payrolls, Powell

(Sharecast News) - All eyes at the end of the week will be on the US non-farm payrolls report for the month of February.
The fresh figures will come as investors try to glean what impact the recently announced cost-cutting drive by the US Department of Government Efficiency will have on government hiring, both in the near-term and across 2025.
Yet some observers believe that it is too early for any firing among probationary workers, or those still without civil servant status, and contractors to show up in the monthly payrolls data.
Hence, consensus is for a 158,000 increase in non-farm payrolls following a reading of 143,000 for January (Bank of America: 185,000).
Private payrolls meanwhile are seen rising by 130,000, versus a 111,000 gain during the month before.
However, there is also speculation that adverse weather might have dragged on hiring. Furthermore, the NFIB's jobs market survey has revealed a decline in small companies' hiring intentions during the month of February.
Average hourly earnings are forecast to increase at a month-on-month pace of 0.3%.
At least four top Fed officials are scheduled to speak on Friday, including chairman Jerome Powell himself, at 1830 BST, at a forum on monetary policy organised by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
