German factory orders stall, missing forecasts

(Sharecast News) - German factory orders unexpectedly stalled in February, official research showed on Friday.

According to Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, new orders in manufacturing showed no growth in February compared to the previous month.

That was an improvement on January's 5.5% slump, which had been revised upwards from the provisional reading of -7%.

But it remained well below forecasts for growth of 3.5%.

Once large-scale orders were stripped out, orders softened by 0.2%.

Destatis said that "strongly opposing trends" could be seen in individual sectors.

Dragging the overall print lower was a 7.4% slump in new orders in fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment.

Other sectors reporting heavy falls included electrical equipment - down 5.3% - and the pharmaceutical industry, which saw orders fall 5.9%.

In contrast machinery and equipment reported a 3.4% increase in new orders, while transport equipment - which covers aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles - saw a 3.8% rise.

The automotive industry, one of Germany's biggest sectors, posed a 0.6% uptick in new orders.

Year-on-year, overall factory orders were 0.2% weaker.
