German inflation confirmed at four-month low as energy prices drop

(Sharecast News) - The annual rate of German inflation fell to a four-month low in March, final estimates from the Federal Statistical Office confirmed on Friday.
The year-on-year change in the consumer price index eased to 2.2% last month, down from 2.3% in February and in line with the preliminary figure released two weeks ago, Destatis reported. This was the lowest reading since November.

While food inflation picked up again, energy price deflation accelerated to -2.8% after staying at -1.6% for the preceding three months, with a 4.6% drop in motor fuel prices and a 1.6% decline in household energy prices.

Food inflation picked up to an annual rate of 3.0% from 2.4%, with big increases in the prices of edible fats and oils (+9.2%), fruit (+5.7%), vegetables (+5.3%), sugar, jam, honey and other confectionery (+4.9%) and dairy products and eggs (+4.1%).

When excluding energy prices, inflation would have been 2.7%; when excluding both food and energy, inflation would have been 2.6%.

"Both rates have exceeded overall inflation for over a year, thereby demonstrating that inflation was above average in other important product groups," Destatis said.
