US open: Stocks higher amid ongoing trade tensions

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the green early on Friday as Donald Trump's ongoing trade war with China continued to escalate.
As of 1445 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.34% at 39,726.79, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.43% to 5,290.82 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.77% firmer at 16,513.22.
The Dow opened 133.13 points higher on Friday, reclaiming some of the previous session's losses.
Tariffs remained in focus at the open after Donald Trump paused his country-specific tariffs, instead implementing a universal rate of 10%, with the notable exception of China, which he slapped with a 145% levy.
China then retaliated by raising duties on US products to 125% from 84%. China's finance ministry also stated that even if the US continues to impose higher tariffs, it would "no longer make economic sense" and "become a joke in the history of world economy".
On the data front, wholesale prices in the States undershot market forecasts last month, partly as a result of a decline in energy costs. According to the Department of Labor, so-called final demand prices dropped at a month-on-month pace of 0.4% in March (consensus: 0.2%). Final demand goods prices plummeted by 0.9% when compared to February, with those for food down by 2.1% and energy by 4.0%. In annual terms, final demand price growth slowed from a 3.2% clip in February to 2.7% last month. Outside of food and energy, final demand goods prices rose by 0.3%.
Still to come, the University of Michigan's consumer confidence index will be published at 1500 BST.
In the corporate space, some of the biggest names in banking were due to report on Friday, with Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock all set to publish their latest quarterly numbers.
