Week ahead: Diageo, Cranswick and M&S in the firing line

(Sharecast News) - As we enter into the second half of May, the first-quarter earnings and AGM seasons are coming to an end, meaning a flurry of activity in the coming week for UK corporates.
Next week will see the release of results and trading updates from a number of London-listed heavyweights, including Big Yellow Group, Cerillion, Cranswick, Diageo, LondonMetric, Marks & Spencer, Gregg's, Vodafone, Great Portland Estates, SSE, Curry's, BT Group, easyJet, Johnson Matthey and Tate & Lyle.
Diageo shareholders will be waiting on third-quarter trading update on Monday to see how the spirits and drinks maker's North American business and global supply chains are faring amid ongoing tariff uncertainty.
"Investor positioning on DGE has turned negative, and short interest has sharply picked up due to its high exposure to a weaker US consumer and Spirits category trends," analysts at UBS said on Friday in their Week Ahead report.
Cranswick's full-year results on Tuesday in particular will be closely watched given the meat producer's decision on Monday to temporarily shut its Lincolnshire farm following animal rights abuse claims.
Shares in Cranswick tanked this week as Britain's Big Four supermarkets all suspended supplies from the farm after staff were secretly recorded engaging in inhumane practices that put pigs under distress and considerable pain.
Similarly, investors in M&S will be waiting to see if the retailer will give any guidance on how the recent cyberattack has affected sales, given the company has been forced to pause all online orders over the past month.
Full-year results from the firm on Wednesday are expected to address this, but with the shares down 17% since the cyberattack was first announced, "this suggests [the] market is partially pricing in some impact", UBS said.
"We expect MKS to address this at the FY results catalyst where we could see some downside based on the severity and timeline of disruption," analysts said.
