(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was down 0.2% at 8,667.30 in afternoon trade on Monday.
Precious metals miner Fresnillo was the top gainer as gold prices rallied.
Joshua Mahony, chief market analyst at Rostro, said: "Gold prices are on the rise once again today, as the precious metal builds on the rebound seen after Thursday's low of $3122.
"Prices have gained over $100 since then, and the Moody's downgrade does highlight the reasoning behind the move away from US treasuries and towards gold."
Airlines flew higher in tandem with Ryanair, which gained on the back of results. EasyJet and BA and Iberia owner IAG both rose.
On the downside, stocks that are particularly exposed to the US were the worst performers on the index, with Pershing Square Holdings, Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust, Flutter and Ashtead all weaker.
