Week ahead: International trade, Ukraine, OPEC+ in focus

(Sharecast News) - The market spotlight over the coming week will be, save surprises, on trade talks between the US and European Union, together with geopolitics around Ukraine and in the Middle East.
Regarding the former, on Friday the US president said that Washington would levy a 50% tariff on all EU goods starting 1 June, but later postponed any increase until 9 July after Brussels asked for more time to negotiate.
As regards Ukraine, there is a small probability that Ukrainian and Russian officials might hold some contacts at the Vatican starting as soon as in the next few days - or so it was hoped.
President Trump however had strongly criticised both sides over the preceding weekend, especially Moscow for its decision to ramp up its attacks , especially those on urban areas with the resulting loss of civilian lives.
Investors will also be digesting the headlines out of a meeting between US and Iranian negotiators at the weekend.
Against that backdrop, Friday will bring with it a reading on the US central bank's preferred inflation gauge, the price deflator for personal consumption expenditures covering the month of April.
Also due out, on Wednesday, are the minutes of the US Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting.
Of potentially key importance, multiple Treasury debt auctions will be interspersed throughout the week, starting from Tuesday.
Thursday, meanwhile, will bring with it a revised reading for economic activity in the States during the first quarter of 2025.
In the euro area, the main data points to watch out for will also come on Friday, in the form of readings for German, Italian and Spanish consumer prices.
No major economic reports will be released in the UK.
Come Saturday, OPEC+ oil ministers will meet to decide on output policy.
