Week ahead: Housebuilders in focus as Bellway, Persimmon report

(Sharecast News) - Housebuilders will be in focus next week, with reports due from Bellway and Persimmon, while on the corporate front, UK jobs data and US consumer price inflation figures are on Tuesday, and second-quarter UK GDP is out on Thursday.
Bellway and Persimmon are due to release a full-year trading update and first-half numbers on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

For Bellway, UBS expects the key focus to be on current trading, FY25 guidance and building blocks for the FY26 outlook.

For FY25 (year to July), it forecasts 8,650 volumes, up 13% year-on-year and in line with a guidance range of 8,600 to 8,700. UBS expects an EBIT margin of 10.9% with an EBIT of £299m, in line with consensus of £300m.

Pre-ex profit before tax is seen at £282m, down 1% versus consensus and UBS expects year-end net debt of £29m and average FY25 outlets of 24.

For Persimmon, UBS expects the key focus to be on current trading, the FY25 outlook and sales outlets.

For the first half, it expects completions of 4,700, up 6% year-on-year and in line with consensus.

It also expects an EBIT margin of 13.3%, up 28 basis points on the year and pre-ex profit before tax of £158m, up 6%.

For FY25, the bank forecasts completions of 11,300, in line with consensus at 11,340 and an EBIT margin of 14.5%, up 32 basis points and pre-ex PBT of £421m, up 7%.

On Wednesday, third-quarter results from travel firm TUI are due.

Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said TUI is heading into next week's results following a mixed second quarter, which was impacted by the timing of Easter.

"This timing shift is expected to work in the company's favour in the upcoming quarter, providing a positive boost to numbers," he said. "Although summer booking patterns reported in May showed some softness in Germany, management has been clear that this was a timing issue rather than a sign of underlying weakness in the region.

"Despite ongoing cost-of-living challenges and economic uncertainties, the overall outlook for European package holidays remains encouraging. Management's commentary also supports expectations for a strong summer season, reflecting the resilience of European consumers.

"Analysts are optimistic about the third quarter, forecasting revenue growth of around 6.7% to €6.2 billion. Operating profits are set to rise at a faster pace of around 12% to €500 million, which is ahead of the 7-10% full-year target."

On the macro front, UK average earnings and the unemployment rate are out on Tuesday.

MCH Markets Insights' Michael Hewson said the picture for unemployment has darkened considerably over the last few months. He noted that since last October's budget, the level of UK unemployment has risen from 4.3% to 4.7% in the three months to May, having been at 4% soon after the new government took over the reins at the Treasury.

"The deterioration has been very rapid and appears to have accelerated in recent months, especially since April when the new NI tax rates and minimum wage increases kicked in," he said.

"Recent PMI reports have continued to paint a deteriorating picture for unemployment prospects with a lot of companies looking to either shed staff or are reluctant to take new staff on. The expectation is that this is unlikely to improve which could see unemployment levels head towards 5% by year end.

"This deterioration in the labour market, along with weaker growth prospects is what prompted the Bank of England to cut rates by another 25bps this month, however with inflation at 3.6% and looking sticky it's likely to make it a difficult trade-off when it comes to further rate cuts as we head towards year end."
