(Sharecast News) - Major indices closed lower on Monday after the blue-chip Dow Jones rocketed to fresh intraday and closing records in the previous session.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.77% at 45,282.47 and the S&P 500 shed 0.43% to 6,439.32, while the Nasdaq Composite gave up earlier gains to wrap up the session 0.22% weaker at 21,449.29.
The Dow closed 349.27 points lower on Monday, taking a bite out of solid gains recorded in the previous session after Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell opened the door to rate cuts at his keynote Jackson Hole address. Powell seemingly indicated that the central bank may begin easing monetary policy at its September meeting, sending expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut to around 84%, from roughly 75% earlier in the week.
The Nasdaq initially traded higher on Monday, buoyed by Nvidia and Intel shares, the latter of which extended its rally from the previous session, driven by news that the White House had taken a 10% stake in the chipmaker. However, the stock eventually lost its footing and ended the session 1.01% lower.
On Monday's macro slate, the Chicago Federal Reserve's national activity index ticked down to -0.19 in July, down from June's revised -0.18 reading, indicating that US economic activity remained below its historical averages for a fourth month in a row.
Elsewhere, sales of new US single-family homes edged lower in July, pointing to continued pressure on the housing market as a result of elevated mortgage rates. According to the Census Bureau, new home sales fell 0.6% month-on-month to a seasonally adjusted annualised rate of 652,000 units in July, following a sharp upward revision to June's figure, which was raised to 656,000 units from 627,000. On a year-on-year basis, sales were down 8.2%. Economists were expecting to see a monthly increase to 630,000 units.
Finally, the Dallas Federal Reserve's manufacturing business index fell to -1.8 in August, down from +0.9 in July, with the production index coming in at 15.3, down from July's reading of 21.3 but still well above average. On the price front, raw materials prices edged up to 43.7, well above the average of 27.4, while finished goods prices rose four points to 15.1.
No major corporate earnings were released on Monday, with investors looking ahead to quarterly numbers from the likes of Nvidia and Dell later in the week.
