(Sharecast News) - Business activity in the key Chicago manufacturing sector contracted at a much sharper rate than expected in August, according to a closely followed survey from the Institute for Supply Management on Friday.
The Chicago Business Barometer, which surveys purchasing managers in manufacturing across the region, sank to just 41.5 from 47.1 in July.

The consensus forecast was 46.0.

This was the 21st month in a row below the 50-point level which separates growth from contraction, and the biggest one-month drop in the index since December 2023.

The sharp drop was driven by a significant fall in new orders, with the new orders indicator sinking 10.8 points - its largest fall since September 2023.

Meanwhile, the employment index sank 5.9 points to its lowest since June 2020, and the production index slipped 3.6 points to its weakest in nine months.
