Electricals retailer Currys shot higher as it hailed a "strong" start to the year, launched a £50m share buyback and reported a 3% jump in group sales in the 17 weeks to 30 August.

Genus surged after the animal genetics company reported "substantial strategic progress" over the year to 30 June, as it reported a big jump in profits and revealed a positive update to its joint venture in China.

RBC Capital Markets slashed its target price for Hilton Food Group by nearly 30% after cutting its medium-term targets following the food packaging company's mixed first-half results.

The broker trimmed its target price from 1,050p to 750p and kept a 'sector perform' rating on the stock. Shares in the firm rose slightly on Thursday after a 17% plunge a day earlier as the company reported that softness in its seafood division - driven by "significant" raw material inflation - weighed on figures for the six months to 29 June, with statutory profit before tax down 4.7% year-on-year.

Hammerson, Ithaca Energy, Derwent London, Hochschild Mining and Rathbones all fell as they traded without entitlement to a dividend.

Alfa Financial Software's share price jumped on Thursday after the asset finance tech company impressed with "exceptionally strong" interim results, according to Shore Capital.

The software developer said on Thursday that its first-half trading performance was in line with expectations, putting the group on track to meet full-year expectations.

Total revenues were up 20% in the six months ended 30 June at £62.5m, while annual recurring revenues rose 16% at £41.6m, with a net revenue retention rate of 112%. Pre-tax profits rose 34% to £21.5m and earnings per share increased by 33% to 5.38p.

In line with a recent trading update, the group delivered 22% organic revenue growth in the first half, compared with Shore Capital's full-year forecast of 13%, which implies a slowdown to just 7% in the second half.
