UK's Rayner quits govt over property tax row

(Sharecast News) - UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Housing Secretary resigned from the government on Friday over her failure to pay enough property tax on a flat she had purchased.
Rayner was found to have breached the ministerial code by not following a recommendation that she seek expert advice on her stamp duty liability for the £800,000 property in Hove, on England's south coast. The Labour MP claimed she had been told she was only liable for the lower rate of tax when in fact the bill could now be £40,000 higher.

Two separate law firms suggesting that she needed specific tax advice, with one recommending she did so. Rayner had classified the flat as her only property despite spending much of her time with her children at the family home in Greater Manchester.

Her share of the Manchester house was placed in a trust established in 2020 to manage a payment to one of her sons, who had been left with lifelong disabilities after at birth.

Rayner's departure sparked a reshuffle among Cabinet ministers as Prime Minister Keir Starmer attempted to reassert his authority. The deputy leader was one of the few working-class left wing MPs in government.
