UK high street sales rise as online activity jumps, says BDO

(Sharecast News) - Underlying UK retail sales jumped last week, according to a closely watched retail indicator published on Friday by accountancy firm BDO, with all categories experiencing "healthy" results online.
Total like-for-like sales were up 6.89% over the week to 23 December, compared with a negative base of -18.32% on the same week last year.

In-store sales were up 3.86% year-on-year, while non-store (online, mail order and other non-store channels) sales surged 10.74%, BDO's High Street Sales Tracker showed.

While last week's cold snap will have likely deterred some visitors to high streets, comparatives with 2024 were impacted by last year's Storm Bert, when wintry conditions and heavy rain kept shoppers away.

As a result, overall retail footfall was 4.2% higher than last year, with 3.5% growth in shopping centres and 5.1% growth on the high street.

LFL sales in the lifestyle category rose 4.75%, following a 22.63% slump the previous year, marking the third week of growth over the past five, helped by strong performances online.

Fashion LFL sales were up 6.42%, having fallen 17.12% last year, marking the seventh consecutive week of year-on-year growth.

Meanwhile, homewares sales surged 18.3% on a LFL basis, despite a 5.05% gain the previous year.
