Nestle launches global baby formula recall after toxin found

(Sharecast News) - Nestlé has launched a global recall of certain baby formula products after identifying a potential contamination risk involving a toxin linked to food poisoning.
The food and drink giant said specific batches of its SMA infant and follow-on formulas were not safe for consumption after it was found they could contain cereulide, a toxin that can cause nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.

Nestlé said there had been no confirmed cases of illness linked to the affected products, but the recall was being carried out as a precaution.

The company confirmed that the recall applied worldwide, with impacted batches sold across several European countries including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy and Sweden.

In France, the affected products are sold under the Guigoz and Nidal brands, while in Germany they are marketed as Beba and Alfamino.

In the UK, batch numbers are available on Nestlé's website and via the Food Standards Agency.

Nestlé said all other products, including unaffected batches of the same formulas, remain safe to consume and that customers will be offered refunds.

The company added that the issue was traced to an ingredient supplied by a third party and apologised for the concern caused to parents and caregivers, stressing that infant safety was its top priority.

The UK Food Standards Agency warned that cereulide, which is produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria, is not destroyed by cooking or boiling water and may still be present when formula is prepared.

Jane Rawling, the FSA's head of incidents, urged parents and caregivers not to feed the affected products to infants and said the agency was taking urgent action to ensure they were removed from sale, the BBC reported.

She advised anyone with health concerns after feeding the products to seek medical advice by contacting a GP or NHS 111.
