Meta reveals bold plans to support US nuclear-power developments

(Sharecast News) - Facebook owner Meta Platforms has announced new agreements with three companies to back the next generation of American nuclear power plants, which it claims will help "power our AI future".
"Today, we're announcing landmark agreements that will extend and expand the operation of three nuclear power plants, boost the development of new advanced nuclear technology, and foster job growth in several American communities," the tech giant said in a statement.

Meta announced new partnerships with nuclear power developers Oklo and TerraPower to support new nuclear reactors and the development of nuclear technologies.

The firm is also providing financial support through a deal with Vistra to extend the lifespan and energy production at two plants across Ohio and one in Pennsylvania.

The projects, which are expected to support up to 6.6 GW of new and existing clean energy by 2035, will create "thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of long-term operational jobs", Meta said.

No financial details were disclosed regarding the agreements.

"Our agreements with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation make Meta one of the most significant corporate purchasers of nuclear energy in American history," said Meta's chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan.

"State-of-the-art data centers and AI infrastructure are essential to securing America's position as a global leader in AI. Nuclear energy will help power our AI future, strengthen our country's energy infrastructure, and provide clean, reliable electricity for everyone."

Meta was trading flat in pre-market activity on Friday, while Vistra jumped 17% and Oklo rose 18%.
