US pre-open: Futures trade lower following soft start to the week

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street futures were in the red ahead of the opening bell on Tuesday after major indices logged a weak finish to August a day earlier.
As of 1230 BST, Dow Jones futures were down 0.55%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.56% and 1.02% lower, respectively.

The Dow closed 374.09 points lower on Monday as higher oil prices and bond yields dampened sentiment following US strikes on two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, adding to geopolitical tensions and fuelling concerns over further rate pressure.

Global borrowing costs ticked up as investors assessed the renewed hostilities in the Middle East and the prospect of tighter policy across major economies. The yield on the 10‑year Treasury note rose to 4.784% early on Tuesday, its highest level since early 2025.

Oil prices advanced again, with Brent crude up 1.14% at $91.52 and West Texas Intermediate gaining 1.46% to $87.01, as traders weighed the risk of supply disruption. Donald Trump threatened further strikes on Iran on Monday after both countries exchanged direct attacks over the weekend, escalating a conflict that had recently shifted toward economic pressure.

On the macro front, S&P Global's August manufacturing PMI will be published at 1445 BST, while the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing PMI will follow at 1500 BST, as will July's JOLTS job openings report.

In the corporate space, Palo Alto Networks and Dell Technologies were both slated to report earnings after the close.
